7. WrestleMania XII

Ahead of their Iron Man match for the WWF Heavyweight Title, Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart were shown in training for what was then an unprecedented marathon.

Michaels was the challenger, Vince McMahon's new man in an era in which he preferred (and was more able) to position one above all others as his figurehead. Michaels' training efforts were arduous in the extreme. He lifted weights, performed pull-ups. He ran up and down bleachers. He flew around a training ring with the grace of a luchador. Hart, meanwhile, jogged along frostbitten pavement, taking care not to slip. He looked like an old man told by his doctor to take up light exercise and cut out read meat. He was also stretched by his father Stu in scenes filmed at the Hart Family dungeon. Fans then weren't as savvy to the business. It didn't appear as if he were in a great deal of pain; he just looked as though his octogenarian dad was outwrestling him.

WrestleMania results, at the top the card at least, are often a formality. Look no further than 2000 to determine why that is the case. It is the event at which fans flock in record numbers to see the happy ending.
