Sometimes, a wrestler's refusal is justified.
Eric Bischoff and Sting deserve plaudits for their patience in 1996-1997. They ignored the easy play and had Stinger's new 'Crow' character camp out in the rafters for a full year before putting him back in the ring for a match again. There's no doubt that this helped the new gimmick's mystique grow and grow.
Sting only occasionally rappelled down to serve some WCW-style justice on the villainous nWo, and his Batman-esque 'saviour from the shadows' routine always sent crowds wild. Despite calls for matches all through '97 though, WCW stood firm - the Bisch just wouldn't budge.
Fans were desperate to see Sting go one-on-one with nWo leader Hollywood Hogan, but they'd have to play along with WCW's waiting game. Unfortunately, the actual waiting ended up being far more fun than the pay-per-view climax...
