10 WWE & AEW Gimmicks That Belong In A Different Era
4. Carmella
Carmella is certainly in the running for the most improved wrestler of the last few years. She deserves all the credit in the world for bringing her ring game up to the level of her character work and she now feels like a credible threat in the WWE women's division.
Her gimmick, however, does not.
WWE, for all their faults, have done a stellar job over the last seven years to elevate women's wrestling to the main event of their shows. The work done by the Four Horsewomen, as well as the likes of Asuka, Alexa Bliss, Ronda Rousey and more recently, Bianca Belair, has helped create respect for the division and built an equal platform for the women to wrestle. Or, as WWE would have it written, Stephanie McMahon saved women's wrestling.
Moving away from the "Diva's Era" of women's wrestling, Carmella's gimmick feels airlifted from any of the era's pre-2014. Obsessed with being the most beautiful of all the women on the roster and feuding with wrestlers she finds ugly, feels out of touch with the modern landscape.
You could easily see this current incarnation of Carmella having a long and fruitless reign with awful Diva's Championship. That probably isn't what she is going for.
