What You Remember: Back-to-back big matches like The Undertaker vs. Mankind and Steve Austin vs. Kane made King Of The Ring 1998 a big deal. The card instantly earned a place in the history books because of Mick Foley's stuntman antics and Kane's unexpected title win.
Reality: Just as well, because it had nothing else to offer.
Foley's bumps are genuinely the only reason this card is remembered as fondly as it is. Had he not risked his life to entertain, then KOTR '98 would be 'that show Kane won the title at before Austin regained it on Raw the next night' and that's all. There wasn't a lot of quality sprinkled throughout.
The King Of The Ring tournament itself didn't really get going thanks to bland entrants like Dan Severn and Jeff Jarrett, and it's arguable that The Rock should've won instead of Ken Shamrock. Yep, this one would be long-forgotten without those dual big bumps from Mick.
The New Midnight Express challenging for the Tag Titles though. There was that.
