Times have changed, and not a single month seems to pass in the modern age without rumours or confirmation of WWE signing another major professional wrestling star. The last two years have seen a plethora of big names make the jump to the biggest wrestling promotion on the planet, and more often than not the Kevin Owens, Finn Bálors, and AJ Styles of this world have more than lived up to the hype.

It hasn't always been this way. For the longest time WWE was reluctant to get into bed with men and women who had made their name away from the company. Big name independent signings were rare, and even then they were treated with a certain sense of trepidation. There was plenty of hype when they signed, but WWE's history is littered with wrestlers who were thrown aside before anyone could ask just who was next.
