The relationship between professional wrestling and mixed martial arts has always been contentious, as both industries have long disputed the ideas that they are each other€™s competitors. Comparisons between the what happens in the ring and in the octagon aside, the two sports are the backbone of the pay-per-view industry, and as such are rivals whether they want to be or not. Crossover between wrestling and mixed martial arts has been a two-way street for nearly twenty years with stars like Ken Shamrock and Brock Lesnar crossing back and forth between the two. While mixed martial arts is a legitimate contest as opposed to the predetermined nature of professional wrestling, both activities require a superhuman amount of determination and self-discipline. UFC€™s announcement that former WWE star CM Punk will be stepping into the Octagon set both fanbases buzzing as they speculated how well he€™s going to do in a €œreal€ environment. Professional wrestlers do have an impressive record in mixed martial arts, with fighters like Batista and Bobby Lashley surprising fans in their victories.
