10. GUNTHER

GUNTHER used to be…less defined than he is now.

It very much worked for him; GUNTHER was the super-indie André the Giant, a spectacle, drawing card, an invincible killer who stalked the European circuit and left a trail of bodies in his wake. His lack of a mainstream look was crucial in establishing a romantic sense of authenticity. 

In fact, it worked so well that the first appearance of defined GUNTHER was practically surreal. One of the most distinct-looking wrestlers of his generation almost looked generic - or worse, like he’d compromised something about himself to fit in to WWE, which was a suboptimal look given the GUNTHER character’s disdain for sports entertainment. 

Would the chops look and feel so painful without the weight behind them? 

Since he’s an expert craftsman - an all-timer already, you could argue - yes, yes they would. 

GUNTHER, who looks incredible, thought this through beautifully: he is an unspeakably arrogant and domineering heel who looks down his nose at the “clowns and entertainers” in WWE. 

He almost has to look “perfect” for this character trait to work; otherwise, he’d lack that “He’s right, but he’s still an asshole” factor.
