What has happened to SmackDown Live? In the immediate post-draft world, the blue brand was leaps and bounds ahead of RAW. AJ Styles was carrying the WWE Championship with class and Bray Wyatt, The Miz, Dolph Ziggler, and others were finally given time to shine. Fast forward a year and the roster has been depleted, the writing has been uninspired, and worst of all, Jinder Mahal is WWE Champion.

The lack of interest surrounding Daniel Bryan’s show means this Sunday’s Hell in a Cell pay-per-view isn’t exactly brimming with intrigue. Shane McMahon and Kevin Owens will do battle inside the eponymous structure in the main event, with the entire world expecting Shane-O Mac to fall off the cell to end the match.

The rest of the card doesn’t inspire much excitement in the viewing public, as a number of SummerSlam re-matches sit aside a deader than ditchwater Dolph Ziggler taking on Bobby Rode in a battle of what? Entrances? Gimmicks? Who knows.

Is Hell in a Cell a show that is dead on arrival? Of course not. WWE has a chance to salvage something from this mess. Expectations for the event are low, meaning the company can set the tone ahead of Survivor Series with little external pressure. A number of things must happen on Sunday in order to right the SmackDown Live ship.
