11 Ups & 1 Down From AEW Double Or Nothing 2020
A lacklustre build yields a tremendous show... and an INSANE Stadium Stampede.
AEW Double Or Nothing 2020 felt snakebitten after this week’s Dynamite - and it had zero to do with Jake Roberts.
All Empty Arena Era shows are snakebitten in a way, but this one more so, with Matt Jackson, Britt Baker, and Rey Fenix all suffering injuries of varying severity ahead of the pay-per-view. While Jackson’s rib problem wasn’t enough to take him off the card, Baker and Fenix were both forced to pull out (despite a report to the contrary on the latter), replaced by Penelope Ford and Joey Janela respectively.
These problems, coupled with the lacklustre build to Jon Moxley and Brodie Lee’s AEW World Championship clash (plus the usual empty building concerns) tempered the excitement. A show that should have been AEW’s biggest and most exciting of the year had its buzz muffled.
Regardless, on the back of a terribly sad week that brought the losses of Hana Kimura, Larry Csonka, and Shad Gaspard, the escapism was even more welcome than usual. Time to at least try to switch off and get lost in a world of Stadium Stampedes, Casino Ladder Matches, a Mike Tyson guest spot, the inaugural TNT Champion’s coronation, and more.
Let’s light the fuse...
