Shows like last night's SmackDown are the reason we hold Daniel Bryan in such high esteem.

These two hours belonged primarily to the WWE Champion, who not only delivered one of the best promos of his career on Miz TV, but ensured he was standing tall by the time SmackDown reached its conclusion. The AJ Styles rivalry couldn't be any more exciting at the moment. This is largely down to Bryan, who's prolonged, vicious assault at the night's end got over huge in the building, further justifying the decision to turn him from beloved folk hero to wretched villain.

But the main event scene wasn't the only thing laced with quality last night. Elsewhere, we got the indomitable Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, and Asuka signing their TLC contract, only for two of them to end up on the same side of a tag match. Jeff Hardy and Randy Orton renewed their rivalry (while Samoa Joe watched on from the pub), representatives from SmackDown's three best tag teams faced off in a Triple Threat, and while there was no sign of United States Champion Shinsuke Nakamura, Rusev had pointed words for his next opponent.

This is supposed to be WWE's annual quiet period, but SmackDown just knocked it out of the park. Again.
