It's well-known that Vince McMahon had Roman Reigns earmarked to be the next franchise player for WWE, stubbornly forging ahead with his plans for the Samoan superstar despite his customers' utter rejection of that idea. The plan was for Roman to become the next Austin or Cena - men who would carry the company for years as the backbone of the sports entertainment empire. So far, that seems impossible and in reality hes the next Lex Luger. Luger had a tremendous career, winning championships too numerous to name and headlining multiple big events. The problem is he was never as big a star as everyone always expected him to be, particularly the promoters he worked for (except Eric Bischoff, who saw nothing in him). When Lex came to WWE, Vince viewed him as the successor to Hulk Hogan and threw the entire marketing machine behind him, with the infamous Lex Express tour that sent him around the U.S. in a red, white and blue bus in an attempt to make him Americas next homegrown hero. Unfortunately fans werent buying what WWE was selling and once again plans for the Luger push had to be aborted and shifted to Bret Hart. Sound familiar? The irony is, had they stuck with Lexs original persona of the heel Narcissist, he likely would have been a much bigger star because its a role that fit him naturally. Trying to shoehorn him into the Hogan gimmick just didnt work for Lex and the audience responded in kind. The same thing is happening with Reigns, and Seth Rollins was the Bret Hart in this scenario. Now lets just hope that Vince wises up and addresses the issues with Romans failed push before he shows up at the Mall of America in a dress shirt and supertight pants.
