13 Best WWE Matches Of 2016 (So Far)

6. John Cena Vs. AJ Styles - Money In The Bank

It was a dream match 15 years in the making or so the WWE marketing machine would have you believe. After years spent heading different promotions, delivering performances that established them as legitimate franchise stars, John Cena and AJ Styles would finally mix it up in one of the most anticipated matches of the year.

While it was not nearly the earth-shattering Match of the Year most had hoped for, Cena and Styles did steal the show with a dramatic encounter that came to an end only after Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson made their presence felt on behalf of The Phenomenal One.

Cena, learning from his matches with Kevin Owens, worked a style that favored high-impact maneuvers and little time to rest in between. Styles, on the other hand, opted to slow Cena down, realizing that the longer the match went, the better opportunity he had to wear out his opponent.

Commentators played up the idea that Cena was rusty, covering up a few spots that were clunkier than they otherwise may have been, but that had little effect on the overall quality.

Fans in Las Vegas, home to so many unforgettable Ring of Honor events, were solidly behind Styles and erupted at several different moments in which it appeared as though he may defeat WWE's greatest star.

But he could not. At least not on his own.

Despite signing a contract that ensured The Club would not get involved, Anderson and Gallows hit the ring after a brief referee bump and delivered the Magic Killer to Cena, allowing Styles to secure the win in tainted fashion.

It would be irresponsible to suggest that the finish did not have a ton to do with the placement of this match on the list. Had it been a clean finish or an outcome equally as dirty but less dependent on outside interference, perhaps it would have ranked higher. Still, it was a magnificent match that added to Styles' unforgettable start to both his WWE career and 2016.
