The former WWF Champion returned to the WWF in 1992 as an outdated babyface playing the same persona as he had in the early 80s, but nobody cared in the slightest. However, that had not stopped Hasbro in the past, so why was it different for Backlund? Was it his generic look? If so, that certainly didn't deter Hasbro from putting out a Greg Valentine figure, even if the end result did look like Mama Fratelli from The Goonies. It seems likely that Backlund was not someone the WWF had any interest in marketing as one of their stars when the time came for them to decide who received the figure treatment. He was just a name from the past who served the purpose of putting the young guys over. Few could have predicted he would go on to become a two-time WWF Champion with a heel run in 1994.
