6. The Rock vs Stone Cold Steve Austin - WrestleMania 17
At WrestleMania 17, the two top stars of the Attitude Era concluded this period of wrestling history with an epic match over the WWE Championship. In the year 2000, The Rock surpassed Austin as a star, but still hadnt beat him on a major stage. Austin was 6 months removed from being out for a year due to major spinal surgery. This match would be the kick off point for Austins final run as a top star. He would have an incredible 2001, withstanding two ill-fated heel turns. Leading up to this match, Austin won the Royal Rumble while The Rock regained the WWE Championship from Kurt Angle to set up a battle of the two most evenly matched megastars ever. Usually were lucky to get one of these type of icons, but fans were blessed to get two of them at the peak of their powers. While this was a face vs face encounter, Austin showed hints of a heel turn throughout the buildup by repeatedly mentioning he would do ANYTHING to win. The Rock was just as passionate about proving that HE, not Austin was the standard of excellence in WWE. Right off the bat, this crowd worshiped the folk hero that was Stone Cold Steve Austin. Austin and Rock beat each other to a bloodied state as they built what was known to be the best match of their Mania trilogy. It was complete with Austins heel turn that in theory should have caught fire, but just didnt work. Who was the crowd cheering? Split mass audience but in the building it was Austin.
