Shawn Michaels' 1996 was very up-and-down, featuring many twists and turns centering around his opponents and the future plans the company had for him. The high point came at WrestleMania XII when he defeated the Hitman for the title, but a low point was the Summer of '96 when his opponents were The British Bulldog and Vader. Mr. Perfect actually served as the special guest referee for Shawn's main event match with Davey Boy at the 1996 King of the Ring. Perfect was still in great shape and would soon make a return to the ring, although it would end up being for the rival WCW. There was a tease and groundwork was being laid for a potential Michaels/Perfect feud during the build to the King of the Ring, but it never materialized. Although these two men had been involved in a feud for the Intercontinental Championship at SummerSlam '93, it was cut short having never been settled due to Hennig's back injury flaring up again Perfect was an all-time great and anytime there was a tease of him stepping back into the ring, fans grew excited. The Summer of 1996 was no different and, like a potential match-up with Warrior, a Mr. Perfect vs .Shawn Michaels feud would likely result in the favor of Shawn. Still, instead of matches against Davey Boy Smith and Goldust, the WWE could've booked Shawn Michaels' 1996 around matches with The Ultimate Warrior and Mr. Perfect. Though it still wouldn't have been able to compete with the nWo angle from WWE's competition, a Shawn/Perfect and Shawn/Warrior program would've been much more entertaining television than what fans got.
