Stephanie McMahon was the antithesis of what a wrestling champion should be. She rarely defended the title, cheated when she did and used the title more as a prop than a prestigious prize. It was a status symbol, proof that she and her family ruled over WWE and she could have anything she wanted at any time. Lita frequently suffered from Stephanie's reign of terror, seeing championship dreams turn to terrorizing nightmares, thanks to interference from Kurt Angle, Tori and Trish Stratus. Just days before SummerSlam in August 2000, Lita would have one last opportunity to wrest the gold from the champion. This time, she would have backup in the form of special guest referee The Rock. With the Great One maintaining order and preventing Triple H and Kurt Angle from interfering on Stephanie's behalf, the fiery redhead challenger would have a fair shot at finally capturing the title. Lita was the superior wrestler in every way, as she proved throughout the match. The only time Stephanie was able to take control was when Triple H or Angle was able to divert Rock's attention while the other interfered. Ultimately, the heels were done away with, leaving Rock to plant Stephanie with a spinebuster and Lita to end her title reign with a breathtaking moonsault. The win was a defining moment in Lita's Hall of Fame career. It was her first championship victory and helped her become one of the most popular female performers in the history of sports-entertainment. As for Stephanie, the loss brought an end to her Honky Tonk Man-like run with the title. After refusing to defend the title and finding shortcuts out of every match, she finally got her comeuppance in the form of a loss on the international stage that is Monday Night Raw.
