There were a number of early 1990s gimmicks that were awful but few were as meaningless as Skinner. Steve Keirn, a solid veteran worker who rose to stardom in Florida, was the man behind the flannel but even his experience and talent was unable to mask the ridiculousness and overall sucktitude of the character. By WrestleMania VIII, he had all but outlived his usefulness, as witnessed in his not-so-classic match at the Showcase of the Immortals. Spitting tobacco spit on "The Rocket" Owen Hart and seizing control of the match before the bell, he controlled for a fleeting moment before Hart rolled him up for the win. It was the sole performance on WrestleMania's grand stage for Skinner, and rightfully so. The character was dated, well past its sell-by date even by 1992 standards. It had a very real ceiling to it and the persona reached it at the Showcase of the Immortals.
