14. Shawn Michaels Vs. Bret Hart (WrestleMania 13)
Early plans for the expected WrestleMania 12 rematch would see Bret regain the belt from Michaels, only to lose it back to him down the line, after which Hart would shake Michaels' hand as an endorsement. McMahon altered the plans to not include the belt as late as the first week of February 1997, claiming that it was 'too predictable'. Faced with the prospect of losing the belt to Sid, and then losing to Hart a month later, Michaels suddenly revealed that he had a potentially career-ending knee injury and handed the belt back to the office. The move came under intense scrutiny because of the its timing. Alas, Michaels' decision led to Hart battling Steve Austin at WrestleMania 13 in what may be the greatest match in WWE history.
