16. Becoming The Leader Of The New Nexus

The Straight Edge Society would not be the last time that Punk would become a shepherd to a flock of sheep. The Nexus had been an idea that sounded great on paper; a means of bringing in new NXT talent to bumrush the WWE roster. Young upstart Wade Barrett led the faction, which splintered off into The Corre. Rather than let Nexus die though, Punk decided to form The New Nexus, which comprised such unremarkable members as Husky Harris (later to become Bray Wyatt), Michael McGillicutty (today known as Curtis Axel), and Mason Ryan. While watching each member get initiated was interesting, nothing else about The New Nexus was. At the time, Punk was about to embark upon the second Summer of Punk as the absentee WWE Champion. Thus The New Nexus became an afterthought until it eventually disappeared completely, going out with a whimper and proving once and for all that Punk was not so great at leading factions.
