25 Worst Wrestling Moments Of 2021
22. Cody Rhodes vs Anthony Ogogo
American wrestling has a long-running history with making the foreigner the enemy. Fans are largely used to this, with everyone from Nikolai Volkov and The Iron Shiek to Rusev and Muhammed Hassan being portrayed as deplorable villains. The British have rarely been the target of this particular American fetish. 2021 was the year that changed this, as Anthony Ogogo feud with Cody Rhodes had Uncle Sam taking aim at the United Kingdom.
Anthony Ogogo aka The Guv'nor was an Olympic boxer for the UK at the 2012 games, where he earned a bronze medal. He then found his way to AEW, where he joined QT Marshall's 'The Nightmare Factory', and landed himself in a feud with Cody Rhodes on the road to Double Or Nothing 2021.
The whole thing was littered with standard jibes from both camps, as Ogogo disparaged the US and Cody defended his home country. Things reached an awful low during a ridiculous weigh-in segment of Dynamite, in which Paul Wight couldn't figure out how the scales worked, and the whole thing came to an abrupt and embarrassing end. Ogogo was beaten and virtually discarded by AEW after this short-lived rivalry, though he did receive a pop from the British masses as part of a 16-man tag team match on the Zero Hour pre-show of All In 2024 at Wembley Stadium.
