Despite many longtime fans feeling they'd never get to see the day, AJ Styles made his debut in a WWE ring this past Sunday at the 29th annual Royal Rumble. Any worries about how the crowd would respond to him were flayed within seconds when they went suitably nuts. Sure, there were many in the Orlando crowd who would have been very familiar with AJ from his time based there in TNA, but the reaction was still impressive. AJ Styles is an 18-year veteran of the ring wars, having made his debut way back when in 1998 as the masked Mr. Olympia. A brief run in WCW came as that company had given up hope and were making funeral plans, and he even made two performances as a developmental talent in WWF. Rather than inking a development deal with them, however, he stayed closer to home so that his wife could go to college. This would be no dent for AJ, and in the 14 years that followed his debut in Ring of Honor and TNA he went on to prove himself as one of the top professional wrestlers in the world. He became Mr. TNA, his matches consistently proving a bright spot in an otherwise dreary landscape. After leaving that company he wound up in New Japan Pro Wrestling, and despite a shaky start went on to become one of their top talents before shockingly jumping ship to the WWE this year. So where to start with AJ and his varied back catalogue? Here are five AJ Styles matches you simply have to see.
