4. Ricky’s Going Nowhere, But This Was Fun!
Rey Fenix defended his AAA Cruiserweight Title vs. Ricky Saints in a fabulously zippy opener.
Saints is treading water on the main roster big time and has been for a while, but he’s still really good between the ropes and worked as a challenger in this sort of setting. Some AAA infusion worked for Mexico City’s wrestling daft faithful, and Fenix was typically smooth out there himself. This wasn't going to be some 30-minute stunner by any means, but it had its place on "Championship Friday", that's for sure.
Some reading/watching might've missed every bit of it, but the pair had actually done some build for this online and in non-televised skits aired on WWE.com and social media. Unfortunately, we didn't really get to see them line anything up on SmackDown proper, but the important thing was that the match clicked. Good news incoming: It did. This was like a teaser of more to come between these guys.
For proof of that, just check out the promo segment that aired deeper into the episode. Ricky initially called Fenix "the better man" and put his hand out for Rey to shake. After that, he walked away and blindsided the masked man before insinuating that things aren't over by a long shot between them. If that means another match is on the schedule, then sign this writer up!
Fenix probably has next to no chance of getting on a mainline WWE PLE whilst AAA Cruiser Champ, but Saints going to AAA or running it back on a future episode of SmackDown sounds pretty fun.
