OH MY GAWD! Who doesn’t miss that coming through their television? Probably one of the most celebrated commentators ever, it seems a tragedy that we never got a true feel of how he and Jim Ross would work in tandem. The voice of ECW was Wrestling Observer Newsletter’s best television announcer in 1994, 1995, and 1996 breaking Ross’ winning streak that started in 1988. So if you need a talent that is in the realm of a Jim Ross, Styles might be your guy.

And Joey himself even said in an interview with 411mania back in 2016 that “going forward I would like to be the ‘voice of the indies’. Indies that I feel are special or have a good buzz or are people I know and that are Tommy Dreamer approved.” Well, Tommy Dreamer was getting stapled in the head by Jimmy Havoc at Double or Nothing so I think that’s a stamp of approval if there ever was one. And in a way, AEW has really become the voice of the indies in their own right.

And let’s not forget that worked shoot Joey had back in 2006 when he was on his way out of Raw. Styles didn’t get to cover WrestleMania 22 because he couldn’t stop calling wrestling matches instead of telling stories. Although he continued working there, you could see the genuine lack of respect he had for what WWE was doing with their product even back then. He wanted pro wrestlers, not sports entertainment. And that is right on brand with what AEW is all about.
