6 Huge First-Time Matches WWE Have Totally Wasted In 2017
2. John Cena Vs. Roman Reigns
It's tough tell how John Cena vs. Roman Reigns will turn out, but the crowd reactions are going to be all over the place.
Roman is the most divisive wrestler on the planet. Overrated by his defenders and grossly underrated by his detractors, he is beloved by WWE's younger audiences, but loathed by most fans above adolescence. He has taken Cena's long-held role as the company's resident Superman babyface, and while he is a far more consistent in-ring performer than John was at this stage in his career, he still lacks presence on the microphone.
Cena, meanwhile, is far more palatable in his new part-time role, but still retains a huge army of detractors. Nonetheless, there's a high chance he'll be cheered by fans who have spent well over a decade hating his guts, so strong is their disdain for 'The Guy.'
Mixed crowd reactions aside, there's no denying that Cena and Reigns are two of WWE's biggest stars. Booking them on a B-level pay-per-view like No Mercy feels like a major disappointment, and while it'll likely help draw increased attention to the show, WWE should've waited until Survivor Series or the Royal Rumble before pulling the trigger.
