6 Ups & 4 Downs From WWE NXT Spring Breakin' (23 April - Results & Review)
Trick whoops that Mad Dragon, Roxanne retains, and some mediocre matches punctuate NXT special.
NXT launched itself into a new era Tuesday night during the first night of its two-week Spring Breakin’ special, crowning a new NXT Champion.
Trick Williams finally slayed the Mad Dragon, defeating Ilja Dragunov in a must-win match (he had to leave the brand if he lost). In Trick, NXT has tapped their most charismatic, engaging superstar as the guy, despite the fact that his in-ring performances aren’t quite there yet. Williams’ match with Dragunov, however, was aces and gave Trick the best possible start to his reign.
The other big match of the night saw Roxanne Perez retain her NXT Women’s Championship in a solid triple threat. Other matches were spotty in terms of quality and results, which tracks for NXT these days with the mixture of talent. Backstage segments also were campy and poorly acted, which also is on-par for the brand.
Still, that’s kind of a big part of NXT’s charm: Fans go into it knowing they’re getting a more raw, unrefined version of WWE programming. You can either accept it and just roll with it, or you can grumble that it’s a B-wrestling show. Overall, this was a decent offering from the developmental brand.
