6. Trying To Pick Up McIntyre’s Spirits

Matt Riddle regressing back to his “But Raaaaandy…” tag team idiot persona is hardly a positive, but there was a silver lining to it Monday night.

The Original Bro approached Drew McIntyre backstage and tried to bring the Scottish Warrior out of his post-SummerSlam funk, asking him to team up against the Viking Raiders. While Riddle did the same goofball shtick that he employed alongside Randy Orton – and garnered groans because of the regression to a comedy character who is ripe for falling victim to a heel turn – it actually worked to a small extent.

Riddle and McIntyre had previously teamed and had each other’s backs. Drew was clearly down after his loss to Gunther at SummerSlam – Wade Barrett even made mention that the Scot hadn’t returned his calls – and Riddle’s attempts were aimed at raising his spirits. And for one night, it worked, with Drew celebrating their victory. (Next week against New Day might be a different story.)

Of course, this can all fall apart at any minute, much in the way fans expected Orton to turn on Riddle. But if WWE can resist making Riddle a total idiot, he might actually be a sympathetic face for when McIntyre tires of this routine.

Fair warning: If they go the pure moron route, fans might actually cheer McIntyre turning on him, so WWE would be wise to understand there’s a fine line… and when have they ever missed an opportunity at subtlety?
