Speaking of The Visionaries, the team name was a pun directed towards Jake "The Snake" Roberts and his supposed vision impairment. In October of 1990, Roberts was "blinded" when Rick Martel sprayed an atomizer containing his cologne, Arrogance, into the eye of Jake on an episode of the Brother Love Show. Upon being sprayed, Roberts immediately reacted as if his eyesight had been lost and was selling the attack beautifully. For the next several months, Jake worked the gimmick in which he could not see out of his left eye. Roberts even went so far as to wear a contact lens in the eye that suffered the damage and the eye appeared to be completely white (similar to The Undertaker when he rolls his eyes into the back of his head, only more permanently). Throughout these Fall months, when Roberts would appear on television, his eye really looked bad and it was a great job done by the WWF. Jake would play up the vision impairment on several occasions, including an episode of Wrestling Challenge by accidentally attacking the wrong man. "The Model" Rick Martel was wrestling his former tag team partner Tito Santana when Jake hit the ring and, obviously intending for Martel, began pummeling Tito as The Model escaped the ring. Also, on the Survivor Series Showdown, a pre-PPV hype show that often aired in place of Prime Time Wrestling, Jake wore an eye patch during the team interview conducted by Mene Gene Okerlund. At the Survivor Series event itself, Jake was not wearing the patch and viewers got another good look at the eyeball in the pre-match interview conducted once again by Mene Gene. The angle would eventually culminate in the first ever Blindfold Match at WrestleMania VII between Roberts and Martel, but the 1990 Survivor Series saw the feud in full-stride and made for very interesting television.
