7 Greatest Backfires In Wrestling History
6. The Greatest Cash-In Of All Time
After The Shield split up, Seth Rollins became WWE's top heel, but in the end, Roman Reigns was meant to ascend to the position of the company's number one star. He was pushed hard, but an injury put a stop to his momentum. When he came back, fans were more into Dean Ambrose, but WWE moved ahead with the plans for Reigns.
To make matters worse for the future champion, beloved star Daniel Bryan was cleared to return to action just before the 2015 Royal Rumble. Rather than hold his return off for a match he could win, Bryan competed in the Rumble and was eliminated unceremoniously. Fans were furious, and when Reigns won, they were beside themselves.
The road to WrestleMania did Reigns no favors. Poor booking made him so hated that, leading into WrestleMania 31, there was a very real chance that the company's chosen star could be booed out of the building. Though he was originally meant to beat Brock Lesnar for the WWE Title, higher-ups decided not to take the chance of a rejected WrestleMania ending. They called an audible, and had Seth Rollins cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase, join the match, and pin Reigns to win the belt.
Unfortunately, Rollins was booked horribly as champ and business continued to decline, but fans got a great WrestleMania moment out of the bargain.
