7 Things We Learned From The Evolution Of Punk Episode 3
7. The Injury Made Punk Question Whether He Could Fight
In the intro to Hurt, Punk describes his injury as follows:
I was sparring and just heard a loud wet pop. My gut told me that the way it popped, the way it sounded and the way it felt, that I was going to need shoulder surgery. What the f*** does that do to the whole idea of me fighting?
The next time we see Punk in the episode, he's in physio therapy, rehabbing his shoulder. It's clear from that initial voice over, however, that Punk really had some doubt after getting hurt. He refers to trying to see the positives in all of it, but it's also clear that there aren't many. At most, he gets to give his body a rest.
At his age, such a setback couldn't have been easy. As Punk says, the rehab wasn't fun, and every day he wasn't in the gym at Roufusport, he was "losing daylight" as far as his development was concerned. Was this a career-ending injury before his career ever started?
In the end, no, but it seems there was doubt.
