7. First World Heavyweight Championship Reign

“Dreams do come true!” Michael Cole shouted as Rey Mysterio picked up his first WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

It was monumental, happening after the passing of Eddie Guerrero, and telling story of a smaller competitor defying the odds in the land of the giants. However, Mysterio’s reign was the furthest thing from what any fan would have dreamt.

Within weeks of his career high, he lost to Mark Henry, The Great Khali, RVD, and Finlay amongst others. He scored a win from time to time, but most of his championship retentions came from technicalities as seen during his encounters with Kurt Angle and Sabu.

Though the champion, WWE made sure to reinforce the fact Mysterio held the “Heavyweight” belt and wasn't exactly a regular proponent of the league. His tale wasn’t of an underdog who overcame the odds to become a legend, it was that he was lucky to have won the title and could barely get by as he continued playing the role of underdog.
