Perhaps the biggest alarm bell these call-ups set off was that the combination of all the previous factors smelled of desperation.

WWE TV ratings have been declining, which is something that’s unacceptable with two new TV deals kicking in. They have to deliver. Reports indicate Vince McMahon saw his ratings in freefall and randomly dipped down into NXT and pulled up four top superstars to shock the system (and yet, no Undisputed Era).

There was no communication, no plan for these men, and no regard for the fact they were being called up at the busiest time of the wrestling season. As a wrestling fan, we might enjoy the surprise of seeing new faces show up and shake things up like this.

But as a business, WWE can’t continue to operate like this and expect things to improve. Throwing stuff at the wall and hoping something will suddenly stick might yield some fruit, the return on investment will be horrible.
