7 Ups And 2 Downs For WWE NXT (Jun 29)

A new North American Champion is unexpectedly crowned on this week's WWE NXT.

The Great American Bash is within touching distance, so you had to imagine NXT were going to step on the gas when it came to giving you a reason to tune into this year's mid-week summer special. And you'll be pleased to hear that they actually did... well, for the most part.

A pair of new NXT Women's Tag Team Championship contenders were crowned in a riotous three-way tag team tornado, Million Dollar Stakes were raised in the most gloriously goofy way imaginable, and rivals took things up a notch by aggressively standing up from their seated positions. Yet, the issues that have plagued the brand for the better part of 2021 reared their heads once again in the form of a main event scene which refuses to allow you to give a damn.

Flailing blood feuds and top title programmes being reduced to heel-on-heel sneak attacks, were all embarrassingly eclipsed by a dude who still isn't technically cleared to compete. What a mess.

As always, it does feel like NXT is only one good week away from getting its sh*t together, so there's still hope that The Great American Bash can redeem the persistent problems that refuse to die on Tuesday nights. But let's not get ahead of ourselves, there's still a whole week's worth of action to Up and Down, and the return of a much needed tournament to salivate over...
