When the Vincent J. McMahon Legacy of Excellence Award was announced last week, this column mocked it (appropriately) by comparing it to a spoof award on the Simpsons: the 1st Annual Montgomery Burns Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence. It was intended as a joke, but it turns out that life imitated art, as what was presented as a serious, solemn award on multiple occasions during Fastlane was little more than a joke and a plot device. The first recipient of the award was none other than Stephanie McMahon (in character), solidifying the recognition as falling somewhere between a Slammy and a Razzie.Sure, the award served a greater purpose, but it was just typical bait-and-switch from WWE, which makes it impossible to tell when to take anything seriously. Minor knock against the program, but a knock nonetheless.
