Monday's Raw featured a Last Man Standing match between former WWE Champion Kane, and rising star Roman Reigns to kick off the show, in what was a rare occasion for the program. Throughout history, there have now only been three Last Man Standing matches on the program. The last was a June 2009 encounter between current Authority members Triple H and Randy Orton, as the two continued their major feud. Prior to that, Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho had a Last Man Standing contest in October of 2008, during a rivalry in which turned wrestling on it's head. In over 15 years of Monday Night Raw episodes before, there were no Last Man Standing matches. The match type itself was debuted in the WWE in 1999, during a St. Valentine's Day Massacre pay-per-view match between the Rock and Mankind. Since then, it's become an often used match when the WWE wants to further a feud without either man being pinned of submitted.
