WWE's short-lived Hardcore division may have created some memorable moments, but it was also responsible for some of the lowest points of the Attitude Era. Including this abomination.

For those who only remember Pat Patterson as one of Vince McMahon's on-air "stooges", here's a quick history lesson: Patterson was one of three people to win WWE's short-lived North American Championship, was the first ever Intercontinental Champion, had Wrestling Observer's Match of the Year in 1981, and later, as part of the creative team, became one of the only guys backstage capable of talking some sense into Vince.

That's a solid list of accolades, which makes it all the more painful to realize that the last time he ever wrestled, he did so as the butt of a joke.

Patterson -- and his co-stooge Gerald Brisco -- fought for the Hardcore Championship dressed in some of the most horrendous drag you'll ever see. It was treated as a lark, and played out terribly.

The sour cherry on top? Patterson is gay, and has spoken in recent years about his trials and tribulations being a gay man in a business that tends to frown on that sort of thing. He deserved a better, more tactful send-off from the ring.
