8. Musical Tributes

It€™s no secret that music plays a big role in the world of professional wrestling, and that is not just referencing a performer€™s entrance music. The Rock €˜n Wrestling Connection is part of what helped catapult wrestling into the mainstream in the 80s. Since then, music has remained connected to wrestling. So when two legendary musicians passed away during the past week, WWE made sure to pay tribute to both. Last week, WWE aired a small, short tribute to Lemmy Kilmister, frontman of Motorhead, which performed several Triple H (and Evolution) themes. Then on Sunday, David Bowie lost his battle with cancer, prompting another outpouring from WWE. Chris Jericho, who is a musician when he isn€™t in a wrestling ring, paid homage to both men in a promo, name-dropping Motorhead€™s second album, Overkill, and then giving a nod to Bowie with a €œWham, bam, thank you ma€™am!€ And of course, Stardust paid tribute by wearing facepaint resembling that of Bowie€™s alter ego, Ziggy Stardust. That kind of tribute made absolute, perfect sense. It€™s just a shame that he once again was looking up at the lights at the end of the match.
