Remember this guy? As hard as it may be to believe looking at the billion-dollar global brand that Dwayne Johnson has become, his first foray into the world of wrestling was an utter bust. He debuted at Survivor Series 1996 with all the hype in the world. Constant vignettes aired on WWF television that heavily pushed his lineage. He was the first ever third generation wrestler in WWF history and given the nickname 'The Blue Chipper', after sports athletes that are targeted for signing by teams at a higher level. On his first night he was the sole survivor on his team, and after 3 months had won the Intercontinental championship. But, as Rocky's kin Roman Reigns would later discover, a combination of inexperience, a cheesy straight-laced character and an 'unearned' push to the top results in a negative backlash. He was routinely booed during his matches: https://youtu.be/6gdwwnat5Mw?t=615 The fans would also chant 'Rocky Sucks' and 'Die Rocky Die' at him, completely denying his status as a babyface. When he returned from injury in August of 1997, he was a changed man. He aligned himself with the villainous all-African American stable Nation of Domination and began to cut scathing promos on the fans, citing 'Die Rocky Die' as what drove him to the dark side. He refused to acknowledge the name Rocky Maivia and instead began to refer to himself as simply The Rock. His heel promos were so constantly entertaining and, combining this with the natural increase in the quality of his wrestling, the fans started getting behind him in a big way. Just a little over a year after leaving Rocky Maivia behind, the Rock was crowned WWF Champion for the first time. He may never have got there without 'Die Rocky Die'.
