Cynical fans who remember the events of last year's Royal Rumble would not at all be surprised if Roman Reigns goes the distance and successfully retains his WWE World Heavyweight Championship in Sunday's main event. Taking into consideration the reaction to that very same Rumble, and the fallout that occurred from it, Reigns leaving Orlando with his title intact would be a substantial surprise. The fans in Philadelphia turned on Reigns from the start, disenfranchised with the way he had been shoved down the throats of the WWE Universe by management, not to mention the complete lack of intrigue or drama that surrounded his inevitable win. Booking him to win the Rumble from the No. 1 position, overcoming the odds in a way that would make John Cena hurl up his neon-colored lunch and retaining the title would result in backlash that makes last year's hatred look like a polite rejection of the second-generation star as the face of the company.
