The Honky Tonk Man is the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion in WWE history. The Elvis impersonator was a reviled heel that moonlighted as a cool, cocky and a literally bad musician, who sang his own terrible theme song. To sum up his reign, for 64 weeks Honky escaped numerous main event matches around the country by getting counted out, or disqualified to retain his precious title. Fans happily handed over their hard earned money, hoping someone would finally give Honky what was coming to him. Upon examining Honkys reign, he was originally meant to be a transitional champion, until an injury to Jake Roberts changed everyones destiny. Honky became a draw in his own right, and WWE just left the title on him. Angering fans everywhere. Furthermore, its easy to see why fans couldnt wait to see Honky lose the title. He declared himself The Greatest IC Champion of ALL-TIME directly after the reigns from Randy Savage and Ricky Steamboat, and Honky wasnt exactly on par with them inside the ropes. Braggadocios statements never tend to work out in real time, ask Muhammad Ali. Honkys song, voice and promo style were put on this earth for fans to hate. He cheated in every situation, and held the title for an outrageous amount of time. Did I mention Jimmy Hart was his manager? By the time Summerslam 88 rolled around, Honky was at the height of his arrogance. He issued an open challenge, and was met with The Ultimate Warrior. 30 Seconds later, Honky was vanquished, and Madison Square Garden erupted like the Knicks had won an NBA Title.
