Kenny Omega will defend his AEW World Championship against Rey Fenix on night one of the upcoming New Year's Smash double-header (30 December), the promotion has confirmed.

This was put together during last night's episode of Dynamite. Omega engaged in a plunder-heavy pseudo squash of Joey Janela, who was supposed to face 'The Best Bout Machine' in October's World Title Eliminator tournament before pulling out, with Don Callis providing running commentary on the microphone throughout. Afterwards, Callis continued his rant, effectively claiming that every question had been answered and Omega was ready to move on..

Out came Death Triangle. PAC pointed out that Fenix had never been beaten in the Eliminator tournament, with injury forcing him to sub out for Penta El Zero M, whom Omega defeated. Thus, the Lucha Brother was in line for a title shot, and while Callis ripped PAC for making demands, 'The Bastard' revealed that Tony Khan had already put the match together.

A logical piece of booking here, considering Fenix's tourney withdrawal. He and Kenny are yet to go one on one in AEW but worked a fantastic match for the AAA Mega Championship last October, with Omega prevailing.
