Alberto Del Rio's Contract Would Allow Him To Leave WWE In September
Could the former WWE Champion quit WWE?
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting that Alberto Del Rio, who returned to WWE last fall after more than a year away from the company, has a clause in his contract that would allow him to leave in September if he so chooses.
This news follows unsubstantiated rumors that Del Rio is unhappy in the company, fueled by the fact that he and real-life girlfriend Paige were split up in the WWE draft.
Del Rio was fired from WWE in August of 2014 following an incident with an office employee who made a racist remark toward him. The former WWE Champion then began working for Mexico's AAA promotion (and its sister group, Lucha Underground), immediately winning the company's heavyweight championship. In October of 2015, though, he shocked fans with a surprise return to WWE, defeating John Cena for the U.S. Championship at Hell in a Cell.
Del Rio, whom WWE refused to let drop the AAA Mega Championship, was reportedly being paid very well for his latest tenure with the company, but within weeks of his return, he was struggling to get over. An ill-advised "Mex-America" alliance with Zeb Colter and membership in The League of Nations quickly made fans lose interest and currently, Del Rio is primarily an undercard worker.
If Del Rio were to return to Mexico (or Lucha Underground, if the show is renewed for a fourth season), the 39-year-old could potentially make a decent living on a reduced schedule. TNA reportedly has interest in the star as well, but as he recently put the group down in an interview, it's not expected that he'll end up there.
