PWInsider's Mike Johnson reports that although WWE had always wanted McIntyre to return at MITB, Drew's desire for a strong comeback storyline held things up. In the end, the two sides came to an agreement, with McIntyre seemingly set to feud with Intercontinental Champion Gunther - whom Drew accosted at the premium live event.

Sources have indicated that McIntyre hasn't signed a WWE contract extension. The two parties haven't started negotiations, owing to the amount of time left on Drew's contract, which is set to expire in early 2024.

Fightful Select corroborates the point on McIntyre's desire for strong creative, adding that although he wasn't active on television or social media, Drew stayed in contact with Chief Content Officer Paul 'Triple H' Levesque during his absence.

Drew had been away from WWE since April's WrestleMania 39, where he faced Gunther and Sheamus in an acclaimed Intercontinental Championship Triple Threat. Mounting injuries have been cited as the reason for his inactivity.
