Jeff Jarrett's special guest referee spot at WWE SummerSlam 2022 is currently being treated as a one-off.

Dave Meltzer reports in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that while such plans can always change, Jarrett's SummerSlam role isn't part of a scheme to turn him into a regular television character.

'Double J' was announced as the special guest referee for The Usos and Street Profits Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship match last week. WWE had initially built the official up using a mystery angle, though the premium live event's location (Nashville, Tennessee) meant Jarrett was always the likeliest candidate.

The current WWE Senior Vice President of Live Events has decades of lineal history in the Nashville area, with his family's wrestling ties there going back to the '60s. This, plus Nashville being where Jarrett lives, is why he's involved at SummerSlam, which takes place on Saturday 3- July.

Jarrett's WWE return was confirmed in May, when news of his appointment as Senior VP of Live Events broke. He had been out of the company for close to two years prior to this but stayed active in wrestling through GCW and the NWA.

As well as SummerSlam, Jarrett has another big wrestling date on his calendar in July. He'll team with Jay Lethal to face Andrade El Idolo and Ric Flair in Flair's final match on the 31st.
