Backstage Update On WWE's Plans For Its Women's Tag Team Championships
Latest on WWE's Women's Tag Team Title plans after stripping Naomi and Sasha Banks.
As announced during last week's episode of SmackDown, WWE plans on crowning its new Women's Tag Team Champions via tournament following the decision to strip Sasha Banks and Naomi of the gold after the duo walked out during Raw four days prior.
WWE is yet to confirm further details on this. Nonetheless, Friday's announcement sparked curiosity, given the lack of existing women's tag teams on the company's roster, whether established or thrown together.
Reporting on today's episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer stated that pitches have been made regarding the tournament and while nothing has been set in stone as of yet, various plans have been thrown around.
At the moment, it looks like a four-team competition is on the horizon. Shayna Baszler and Natalya will likely feature, as will Nikki A.S.H. and Doudrop, who recently formed a new alliance on Raw. Baszler and Natalya, as the most established tandem in the tournament, would probably enter as favourites.
With limited options for the other tournament slots, WWE may look at putting the recently split Carmella/Queen Zelina duo back together or place two singles wrestlers in new combinations, as the company is prone to doing.
As well as being stripped of the Women's Tag Team Championships, Naomi and Banks were suspended indefinitely by WWE last week. The duo's future with the company is currently up in the air.
