Yesterday brought the news that WWE would be referring to Rhea Ripley's NXT Women's Championship as simply the NXT Championship going forward, prompting much discussion across the internet.

Becky Lynch, whose recent WWE Backstage appearance saw her speak on dropping the term "women" from the pro-wrestling conversation, commented on the matter late in the evening, posting the following statement to Twitter:-

Here, 'The Man' distances herself from the name change itself, as the news lead to speculation that perhaps her Backstage appearance was linked to the move. She is, however, totally committed to changing the way we discuss professional wrestling with regards to gender - it's just a coincidence that WWE made this move aimed at greater equality in the same week as Becky's initial statement.

The second and fifth paragraphs resonate particularly strongly here. A true meritocracy based on skill and how well the performers and programmes are "serving the audience" may be a while away, though many would agree it's what wrestling should ultimately aim for.

It'll be interesting to see if the NXT Championship changes are reflected on the main roster. If so, we could soon be referring to Lynch as the Raw Champion.
