Though it came as no surprise following the recent interactions between Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman, in Raw's opening segment, general manager Kurt Angle made it official: Reigns and Strowman will go one on one in a match at Payback.

The issues between Strowman and Reigns date back to the Royal Rumble, where Strowman interfered in Reigns's shot at the Universal Title, costing him the match. Reigns faced the then-unbeaten Strowman at Fastlane, dealing him his first loss and going on to headline WrestleMania against The Undertaker.

On the Raw the evening after WrestleMania, the feud between the two men was reborn. New Universal Champion Brock Lesnar challenged Roman Reigns to a match, but Strowman responded, making it clear that he had "The Beast" in his sights and nobody would get in his way. In order to show he meant business, Strowman subjected Reigns to an epic assault the following week, beating the star to a pulp, then pushing his stretcher off a ledge, and finally flipping his ambulance onto its side.
