Cesaro, Dolph Ziggler And The Curse Of Consistency In WWE
The Show Off and the Swiss Superman are so good that it's holding them back.
In most jobs, hard work is generally rewarded. Consistently high performance level should be commended and the person who is delivering the goods should be a thrown a bone or two every now and then. A raise, a promotion or, hell , even a pat on the back and an acknowledgement of their good work goes a long, long way. The person can - and should - use this as an excuse to work even harder and produce even better things in the future. It's amazing what a little motivation can do.
Of course, professional wrestling is not 'most jobs' and WWE are not most companies, either. Things operate rather differently in McMahonland and it's fair to say that hard work doesn't always equal reward. Vince McMahon expects, nay demands that his employees work hard, since he's the one doing 80-hour weeks on about fifteen minutes worth of sleep. And work hard they do, riding the road for miles upon miles, catching countless red eye flights, working out like demons, doing media in the wee hours of the morning and generally keeping a crazy schedule. Oh, and then there's the whole wrestling part, too.
Now I'm not going to sit here and act like there's not a writing team designating who does what on Monday Night Raw, SmackDown and on pay-per-view/WWE Network special events. Obviously there is. They're the ones who are giving The Ascension three minutes and Kevin Owens fifteen.
Naturally, there's a reason for that, and the reason is that Kevin Owens can carry a fifteen minute match and keep things engaging and interesting. He can work well with a variety of opponents and is a false finish specialist. The Ascension aren't exactly Arn Anderson level workers, so it's doubtful that anyone would want to watch them in longer, more competitive matches. There are other problems with their act, yes, but the fact is that they're just not producing anything exceptional between-the-ropes and that means less TV times for them.
