Christian Cage doesn't want to shortcut his way to the top of All Elite Wrestling.

Interviewed by Sports Illustrated's Justin Barrasso, the industry veteran said that he doesn't have eyes on an immediate AEW World Title match with Kenny Omega, acknowledging he'll have to prove himself first:-

ā€œIā€™m not expecting to walk in and work the main event with Kenny Omega. I have some work to do and I need to prove myself. And looking at the layout of the roster, there are athletes with so much talent ā€” like Darby Allin, who makes me think of Jeff Hardy, or MJF, who is just so talented. The sky is the limit here with a blank canvas.ā€

This comes less than a week after such a match was teased.

Kenny Omega and Don Callis stole Christian's advertised screentime on the latest episode of Dynamite, using his slot to further their storyline with Eddie Kingston and Jon Moxley. When the babyfaces brawled The Good Brothers away from the ring, Cage walked out, going face-to-face with AEW World Champion and almost hitting an Unprettier, only for Callis to pull his charge to safety.

AEW may opt to play the long game with Cage vs. Omega rather than hot-shotting the 47-year-old, who debuted at Revolution 2021 less than two weeks ago, into an immediate title program.
