One side of social media was at its worst during and after CM Punk's AEW Rampage debut last week, with a cruel, callous mob gleefully mocking one audience member who was shown crying as Punk made his long-awaited wrestling return.

The returnee spoke on the situation during a recent appearance on the Kap & J. Hook show for ESPN Chicago, showing his support for the natural, organic response.

Here's what Punk had to say (h/t Wrestling Inc. for the transcription):-

“I’m a Chicago guy. I’m a Chicago sports guy. I cried when the Cubs won the World Series. I cried when the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup, the time that I was alive when they won the Cup, not back in the sixties. You know, it means a lot. And I think it means a lot because I’m so attached to Chicago and sports especially. I understand. So anybody who’s making fun of that dude, you’re making fun of me too. There’s nothing wrong with being emotional at a sporting event or anything you like. I’ll cry at a Marvel movie.”

Punk's return to wrestling drew one of the loudest pro wrestling pops in recent memory last Friday. A huge, building-shaking reaction almost levelled the United Center, and it's safe to say that the fan shown on camera wasn't the only one to shed a tear in Chicago.

But social media is social media. Such platforms embolden the worst elements of society to indulge in their worst behaviours, shielded by the internet's anonymity. It's therefore nice to hear Punk putting himself in the crying fan's shoes and speaking out against the mob.

And said fan can rest easy knowing that anyone who criticised him wishes they could ever be as invested in anything as he was for Punk's return.
