Cody Rhodes LOSES NWA Worlds Heavyweight Title To Nick Aldis
Huge title change highlight's the NWA's 70th Anniversary show.
Cody Rhodes' NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship reign is over.
Former champion Nick Aldis regained the belt in the main event of last night's NWA 70th Anniversary Show, overcoming 'The American Nightmare' in a 36-minute 2-out-of-3 falls bought that has received widespread critical acclaim across the internet, despite the show's apparent production issues.
Cody's reign lasted just just 50 days, with his sole defence coming against Willie Mack at a Ring Of Honor TV taping in September. He initially captured the belt in a huge, cathartic moment at ALL IN, besting Aldis to take the same championship his father held decades ago. This bred hopes of an NWA resurgence, but it wasn't to last.
Its unlikely that this surprising outcome was an entirely creative decision. Cody is committed to ROH and NJPW, and his ALL IN title victory required special dispensation from his full-time employers, while Aldis is a free agent with few major commitments. Understanding this makes the change understandable, but it still provoked a shock response.
The night's other highlights saw the aforementioned Mack capture the organisation's vacant National Championship, while former WWE star Jazz defended her NWA Women's Title against indie standout Penelope Ford.
